Conservation treatment: who decides?

In her book Conservation Treatment Methodology (2007) Barbara Appelbaum presents a general methodology that guides conservators through the decision-making process for conservation treatment of any object. The methodology looks at the composition, condition and aging behaviour of the object and combines that with its biography, its function and the values different stakeholders attribute to it. The methodology addresses the two major goals of conservation treatment: preservation and interpretation. It is all about enhancing values, meanings and use of the object for stakeholders now and in the future.

The discussion will focus around the question ‘Who decides what, and based on which arguments?’. After speakers from the panel, representing different perspectives, have introduced their opinion by a short presentation of a case study from their own experience, the audience is invited to introduce their own case studies and participate in a lively discussion.
