Wouter Steenhaut and Peter Scholliers win Flemish Culture Award

On February 2nd, the winners of the annual Flemish Culture Awards ('Vlaamse Cultuurprijzen') were announced. With these awards, the Flemish government acknowledges the people and organisations that help put Flemish culture on the map. Peter Scholliers, president of FOST - Social and Cultural Food Studies and Wouter Steenhaut, director of Amsab - Institute of Social History, both won an award in their respective categories.Wouter Steenhaut, director of Amsab - Institute of Social History, won the 'Cultural heritage'-award ahead of other nominees such as Brukselbinnenstebuiten and tapis plein. Wouter Steenhaut (1947, Ghent) has a Ph.D. in history and was a co-founder of Amsab - Institute of Social History, the Flemish Archive and Museum of the Socialist Workers’ Movement, in 1978. Since then Amsab-ISG has developed into a modern institute for the study of contemporary history. Its areas of expertise include the social history of the 19th and 20th century and the history of the trade unions during the Second World War.
Peter Scholliers (1953, Ukkel) won the 'Culture of Taste'-award , ahead of the other nominees Slow Food Vlaanderen en 't Grom. Peter Scholliers obtained his Ph.D. in 1984; his research focuses on the history of the standard of living, labor history, wages en prices, material culture, industrial archaeology and the history of food. He is the president of FOST - Social and Cultural Food Studies at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Peter Scholliers is also part of the editorial staff of several international magazines such as Food & History, Food and Foodways and Food, Culture & Society.
Each winner takes home €12,500 and a specially commissioned bronze statuette by sculptor Johan Tahon. The winners in the other categories are:
